The Asian Civilisations Museum was opened in 1997 and is the first museum in Singapore to display exhibits of Asian cultures in a broad but cohesive manner. That is to say, in a way which explores the interests and particulars of each different culture but which also explores how they interact in Singaporean society.

The museum explains that although these civilizations only came to settle in Singapore 200 years ago, the cultures and traditions which they brought with them are ancient in their history. This museum focuses on the history of these cultures and the way in which they have founded and created modern Singaporean society.
