The river in Singapore has been the commercial centre of the city since its foundation. The government decided in the 70s and 80s to redevelop the historic area of Clarke Quay into a vibrant entertainment hub. The plans for redevelopment had to consider the historical character of the district and prioritised the restoration of old buildings instead of demolishing them and replacing them with new ones.

Today, the quay comprises five streets worth of restored warehouse which have been converted into restaurants and night clubs. There are also a number of moored boats which also house floating bars and restaurants.

The historic quayside is now a popular tourist destination, with its colourful spectrum of restaurants and shops, wine bars and entertainment hotspots.

It is vibrant and lively well into the night and somehow manages to embody both Singapore’s rich cultural traditions and humble origins as well as its modern reputation as a successful and fashionable player on the world stage.

There are many ways to pass your time at Clarke Quay. As well as savouring the wide range of cuisines on offer in restaurants in a unique setting you can enjoy a pewter workshop or an exhilarating ride on Singapore’s only reverse bungee.
